“世界氣象日”是世界氣象組織成立的紀(jì)念日，時間在每年的3月23日。每年的“世界氣象日”都確定一個主題，要求各成員國在這一天舉行慶�；顒�，并廣泛宣傳氣象工作的重要作用。
國際氣象組織原為非官方性國際氣象合作機(jī)構(gòu)，在其各成員國代表簽訂的世界氣象組織公約生效一周年之日，即1951年3月23日，就改組為世界氣象組織(World Meteorological Organization,WMO)，成為政府間的國際氣象合作機(jī)構(gòu)，并與聯(lián)合國建立關(guān)系。
1960年世界氣象組織執(zhí)行委員會決定把每年3月23日定為世界性紀(jì)念日，要求各成員國每年在這一天舉行慶�；顒�，并廣泛宣傳氣象工作的重要作用。
每年世界氣象日都有一個中心活動內(nèi)容，各成員國在這一天可根據(jù)當(dāng)年的中心內(nèi)容，開展多種形式的宣傳和紀(jì)念活動，如組織群眾到氣象臺站參觀訪問，舉行有政府領(lǐng)導(dǎo)人參加的群眾慶祝儀式，舉辦氣象儀表裝備、照片、圖表和資料的展覽，舉行記者招待會，由報(bào)刊、廣播電臺、電視臺報(bào)道特寫文章和講話，放映氣象科學(xué)電影，發(fā)行紀(jì)念郵票等
