Lesson 55 Not a gold mine并非金礦First listen and then answer the question.
What did the team find?
Dreams of finding lost treasure almost came true recently. A new machine called The Revealer has been invented and it has been used to detect gold which has been buried in the ground. The machine was used in a cave near the seashore where -- it is said -- pirates used to hide gold. The pirates would often bury gold in the cave and then fail to collect it. Armed with the new machine, a search party went into the cave hoping to find buried treasure. The leader of the party was examining the soil near the entrance to the cave when the machine showed that there was gold under the ground. Very excited, the party dug a hole two feet deep. They finally found a small gold coin which was almost worthless. The party then searched the whole cave thoroughly but did not find anything except an empty tin trunk. In spite of this, many people are confident that The Revealer may reveal something of value fairly soon.

Lesson 55自學導讀First things first課文詳注Further notes on the text
1 .Dreams of finding lost treasure almost came true recently.
His dream to travel around the world at last came true.
2 .The pirates would often bury gold in the cave and then fail to collect it.
(2)fail to do sth
Dont fail to write to us.
He failed to see the reason why they sent him away.
(3)collect
Ill collect my post on my way home.
Dont fail to collect me before you go to the party.
3. Armed with the new machine…
Dont worry.Im armed with an umbrella.
Youd better arm yourself with a warm coat.

entrance可以表示“入口”、“大門”等;

5.Very excited,the party dug a hole two feet deep.

very worried about his child,he phoned the police.
(2)deep
We have a swimming pool six feet deep.

語法Grammar in use
They were preparing for the party for two whole days.
I used to drink heavily, but I have given up drinking now.
I never used to eat a large breakfast ,but I do now.
(2)當used to描寫過去的狀態(tài)時,也不可與would互換,would只
I used to be a waiter,but now Im a taxi-driver.
They used to awn a car.
When I was a boy we always spent/used to spend our holidays on a farm.We would get up at 5 and we would help milk the cows.
Word study

I dont know how to use the word.
The machine has been used to detect gold which has been buried in the ground.
(use用于被動語態(tài),后面的to引導表示目的的不定式,不可與be used to及used to混淆)
(2)be used to表示“習慣于”,后面跟名詞或動名詞,be也可用get等代替:
Im used to shopping alone.
Im used to getting up early.
I soon got used to getting up early when I started working as a baker.
I used to get up early when I worked as a baker, but I dont have to get up early now.
You didnt use to smoke.
You never used to smoke.
The machine showed that there was gold under the ground.
He loves gold more than anything else.
