When writing your cover letter, keep in mind that the reviewer is only interes
ted in one thing: the facts. Do not think of your cover letter as an autobiogr
aphy; it should be brief and to the point. The purpose of the cover letter (an
d resume) should be one thing – it should demonstrate that you meet or exceed
the requirements listed in the job description. It should demonstrate that yo
u're interested in the position, and that you're available to accept the posit
ion if offered. Additional information beyond this can be counterproductive, a
s it dilutes the core purpose of the cover letter.
When writing the cover letter, avoid negatives. A cover letter is not the plac
e to explain why you left or are leaving an employer, why there are gaps in yo
ur employment dates, etc. These "negatives" are best delivered in person durin
g the interview so that your personality can counter them.
Try to avoid a salary history in the cover letter. Even if the position specif
ically asks for your salary history, providing this information will more like
ly cost you a job than not. If the job ad specifically says that resumes witho
ut a salary history will not be considered, give a historical salary range, an
d state that your salary requirements are flexible based on the opportunity th
e position will provide.
Spend time thinking about the layout of your letter, and make sure that it's e
asy on the eyes. It should be easy to scan the letter, and have a logical prog
ression. Keep in mind, the reviewer of your cover letter and resume has hundre
ds (if not thousands) of cover letters and resumes to look at, so make it easy
for him/her to find the information you want to highlight. Bunched up text in
long paragraphs will frustrate anyone who has to review hundreds of resumes a
nd cover letters a week. In addition to the layout, don't just repeat your res
ume. Your cover letter is not a summary of your resume; instead, it's an intro
duction of yourself, and an argument for why you are the best candidate for th
eir company and the specific position. Above all, avoid the generic cover lett
er that you get from books.
Cover Letters are Necessary! Cover letters are simply a letter of introduction. In these letters you are explaining who you are and why you are writing to the resume reader. It is a matter of courtesy that you introduce yourself when you are requesting something of them, in this case an interview.
COVER LETTER主要覆蓋以下三個(gè)問題: "Who are you and where are you?" This should be stated in the first paragraph. "Where did you hear about me?" "What can you do for me? What can you provide relevant to the job?"
一般你可以通過(guò)INTERNET或其它途徑(newspapers and magazines, word -of-mouth or the public library.
Dear Ms. Rogers,
Please accept my application for the position of programmer, advertised in the Ottawa Citizen.
I have always enjoyed working on programming, and have developed many applications in various fields, such as telecommunication, transportation and POS management . I have worked as a senior developer at XYZ Software Inc. I gained a lot of experience there in MS C++ and Sy base SQL Server, which I think would be valuable to your company.
I am enclosing my resume, but would very much like to talk with you in person.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours truly,
Dashan Wang
What Instances Require a Cover Letter? My rule is - if you are not shaking hands with the hiring decision maker and introducing yourself, then you need a cover letter to introduce you. If you are shaking hands with the hiring manager, you are introducing yourself verbally and requesting an interview. In this case, hand them your resume without a cover letter. On the other hand, if you are sending a resume by mail, if you give your resume to a friend to hand in, or if you leave your resume with the hiring manager's secretary then you are not shaking the hiring manager's hand and you need to have a cover letter enclosed with your resume.
Cover Letters Should Be Brief and Simple Hiring managers only glance at cover letters. They have 50+ resumes to read out of which they will select a few candidates for interviews. I recommend letters be 3-4 paragraphs .
Many people provide lengthy autobiographies in the cover letter. They regurgitate their resume and then some. This is a waste the writer's and reader's time.
Cover Letter Content Address these 4 topics in a succinct manner and the hiring manager will be grateful. -For what position are you applying? -How did you learn of the position or company? -Why are you perfect for the position? -Who will contact who? I usually cover 1 & 2 in the first paragraph and a paragraph each for 3 & 4. Thank You Letter Follow up Letter Reference Letter Cover Letters are Necessary!
