1. Did you use to go swimming during summer vacations?

過去你在暑假常常游泳嗎?

(1) go swimming 去游泳 go shopping 去購物

go skiing 去滑雪 go skating 去滑冰

go + ving 常表示去做某事

(2)during 介詞,在……期間

They sleep during the day.

他們在白天睡覺。

I play basketball during summer holidays.

我在暑假期間打籃球。

2. I used to do that in the pond in front of my house.

我過去常常在我家房前的池塘里游泳。

in front of ... in the front of ...

in front of ... 在……的前面(在某個范圍外的前面)

in the front of ... 在……的前部(在某個范圍內(nèi)的前面)

如:There is a tree in front of our classroom.

在我們教室的前面有一棵樹。(樹在教室外的前面)

There is a big desk in the front of the classroom.

在教室的前部有一張大桌子。(桌子在教室里的前部)

3. Who taught you to swim?

誰教你游泳的?

taught為teach的過去式。

如:He teaches us English.

他教我們英語。

(注意:teach為動詞,動詞后加人稱代詞的賓格形式。)

He teaches us to study English.

他教我們學(xué)習(xí)英語。

4. Nobody, I taught myself.

沒有人,我是自學(xué)的。

(1)nobody相當(dāng)于not anybody,作不定代詞,意思是沒有人,無人。

不定代詞作主語時,謂語動詞用單三形式。

如:There is nobody in the room. = There isn’t anybody in the room.

屋子里沒有人。

Nobody knows this way.

沒有人知道這條路。

(2)teach oneself ... = learn ... by oneself 自學(xué)

I teach myself English. = I learn English by myself.

我自學(xué)英語。

5. People like to do interesting things in their spare time.

人們喜歡在他們的業(yè)余時間做一些有趣的事。

in one’s spare time 在某人的業(yè)余時間,one’s代表形容詞性物主代詞或名詞的所有格。如:

in our spare time 在我們的業(yè)余時間

in Jenny’s spare time 在珍妮的業(yè)余時間

6. People usually do what they like.

人們通常做他們所喜歡的。

what they like為此句的賓語,所以稱它為賓語從句,賓語從句的語序要用陳述句的語序。另外:前面我們講到的某人做過的事 what sb. did;某人所說過的事 what sb. said。

如:Do you know where Jim’s father works? (從句為陳述句語序)

你知道吉姆的爸爸在哪里工作嗎?

My mother knows when I was born. (從句為陳述句語序)

我的媽媽知道我在什么時候出生的。

7. They keep pets. They play sports. They sing and dance. They play computer games or chat on the Net.

他們養(yǎng)寵物,做運(yùn)動、唱歌、跳舞、打游戲或上網(wǎng)聊天。

8. They also paint pictures or collect things such as coins, dolls or stamps.

他們也畫畫,收集事物如硬幣、洋娃娃或郵票。

(1)paint 動詞,繪畫(用顏料畫)。draw則多指用鉛筆、蠟筆、鋼筆等畫。

如:The artist paints in water colors.

畫家用水彩繪畫。

The child was drawing a picture.

孩子正在畫畫。

(2)such as 例如,像,后面跟一系列并列的人或物,常為詞或短語,表示例如。而for example 也表示“例如”,后面常跟一個句子。如:

I like fruits, such as apples, oranges, pears and so on.

我喜歡水果,例如蘋果、桔子、梨等。

I know he often does good things, for example, he often helps the old men.

我知道他經(jīng)常做好事,例如,他經(jīng)常幫助老人。

and so on 常放在列舉多個事物句子的后面,表示“等等”。如:

I like English, Chinese, maths and so on.

我喜歡英語、語文、數(shù)學(xué)等等。

9. When people are sick, hobbies can help them get well sooner.

當(dāng)人們生病時,這些愛好可以幫助他們盡快恢復(fù)健康。

get 為系動詞,后面跟形容詞,well既可作形容詞又可作副詞,只有表示身體健康時,well才作形容詞,所以本句中g(shù)et well中的well是形容詞。

1. He doesn’t mind whether they are good or not.

他不介意他們是好的還是差的。

(1)whether ... or ... 是……還是……,不管……還是……

如:Whether he succeeds or fails, he has to do his best.

不管是成功還是失敗,他都必須盡力而為。

I don’t know whether he will come or not.

我不知道他是來還是不來。

(2)在此復(fù)合句中,whether引導(dǎo)的句子作了mind的賓語,即賓語從句,在引導(dǎo)沒有疑問句的賓語從句時whether和if可以互換,表示“是否”。如:

I don’t know whether (if) he will come.

我不知道他是否要來。

但if不可以和or連用。

2. He likes water and I often help him take a bath in a pond near my house.

他喜歡水,我經(jīng)常幫他在家附近的池塘里洗澡。

have a bath = take a bath 洗澡

語法聚焦 Grammar focus Used to

1. used to為一個表示過去常做而現(xiàn)在不復(fù)存在的習(xí)慣的情態(tài)動詞,和其它情態(tài)動詞的用法一樣,后面直接加動詞原形,而且沒有人稱和數(shù)的變化。

如:He used to do his homework on Sunday, but now he often does homework on Saturday.

他過去經(jīng)常星期日做作業(yè),但是現(xiàn)在他經(jīng)常星期六做作業(yè)。

I used to get up at seven in the morning, now I usually get up at six.

我過去常常7點鐘起床,現(xiàn)在我通常六點起床。

2. used to引導(dǎo)的句子,其否定形式和一般疑問句形式有兩種形式。一種和其它情態(tài)動詞一樣,直接在used后加not即(usedn’t)構(gòu)成否定句,或直接把used提前構(gòu)成一般疑問句。另一種是把used變成use,然后再在use前加didn’t構(gòu)成否定句,或在句首加did used 變成use構(gòu)成一般疑問句。如:
